In Italy, a sagra (plural: sagre) is a local festival, very often involving food, and frequently a historical pageant and sporting events: when the sporting event is a historical recreation as well, such as a joust or a horse race in costume or armour, it is called a palio.

The various sagre almost always have their origins in old country fairs or similar entertainments, but many of them now aim at visitors or even foreign tourists, and some, like the Quintana of Foligno, had lapsed for many years but have been recently revived.

A sagra is often dedicated to some specific local food, and the name of the sagra includes that food; the array of gastronomic specialties covered across Italy is amazing: for example, we find a Festival delle Sagre astigiane, a Sagra della Rana (frog) at Casteldilago near Arrone, a Sagra della Cipolla (onion) at Cannara, a Sagra della Melanzana ripiena (stuffed eggplant) at Savona, a Sagra della Polenta at Perticara di Novafeltria, a Sagra del Lattarino at Bracciano and so on. Among the most common sagre are those celebrating olive oil, wine, pasta and pastry of various kinds, chestnuts, and cheese.

But the best thing is that you can eat as much as you can and taste the real traditional recipes, delicious dishes you will for sure remember after you get back home.

Spa and Thermal Tourism in Lazio

Since the Roman Empire we know the benefits of thermal baths which were a normal daily procedure for our ancestors, and now became a medical treatment. 

Before looking at some thermae destinations let’s find out what it does to our organism and how it works.Thermal or spa medicine is a discipline that uses the means of thermal treatment (mineral waters, mud baths, caves) for therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitative purposes. It’s considerate as a natural medicine. Mud, diving in mineral water, inhalation of natural gases are just some of the methods that can be used in a spa to treat different diseases: pulmonary, cardiovascular diseases, various infections. These therapies should be prescribed and given under medical supervision and spas must meet requirements, regulations and administered by staff comparable to other health centres. There is no time more appropriate than others to undergo thermal treatments: any season is suitable, although between May and September, more favourable climatic conditions may facilitate a positive outcome of the treatments.

Crenotherapy
The thermal therapy is also known as crenotherapy (from the greek crené, source). There are two types of this therapy: internal and external.

The following methods of crenotherapy treatment include:

therapeutic drinks, or the administration of mineral water for drink;
irrigation, which can be vaginal, nasal, oral, rectal or bowel;
inhalation therapy, aerosol therapy, but done with hot-humid, mineral and sulphurous waters;
insufflations, for example tympanic insufflations;
Crenotherapic Politzer Treatment sulphur (swallowing sulphurous water with closed nostrils);
tubal catheterization, catheterization used in otolaryngology, for endotympanic insufflation of thermal waters through the Eustachian tube

External crenotherapy includes:

balneotherapy, for example, diving in the water, whirlpools, showers, vascular workout, injections of mineral water;
antrotherapy or spa treatment in the caves;
peloidoterapia (the use of the muds)

The diseases treatable with thermal medicine
Thermal therapy is usually indicated, in general, for chronic, relapsing or chronic-degenerative diseases borne by various organ systems for:

– ear nose and throat diseases and respiratory system
cardiovascular disease, especially the after-effects of venous diseases or chronic venous insufficiency
gynaecological diseases;
diseases of the urinary tract, especially the urinary tract stones;
gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastrointestinal or biliary dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation;
rheumatic diseases such as osteoarthritis or extra-articular rheumatism;
skin diseases, especially psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.

Ehi tu, dove vai al mare?

Ecco che arriva il periodo estivo e tutti non vedono l’ora di andare al mare. Ma come si fa a scegliere il posto migliore senza allontanarsi troppo da Roma? Eh… ci sono un po’ di posticini molto carini. Davvero. Il primo si trova circa 117km da Roma ed è Sperlonga. Lo so che ci sono posti più vicini ma qui non si tratta semplicemente del mare e di spiaggia, qui c’è qualcosa in più da vedere e da fare. Sperlonga si trova in provincia di Latina e ha circa 3.300 abitanti. Per quello che riguarda la spiaggia, la vista e il paesaggio è una meraviglia! Ci sono tanti stabilimenti, per esempio Lido Beluga o Valle Corsari dove potete godervi una piacevole giornata di sole e la sera bervi un cocktail in compagnia di amici magari durante uno degli eventi che organizzano proprio lì, music and fun! Una volta che vi trovate a Sperlonga, non potete non vedere le parti storiche più belle. Come per esempio la Villa dell’imperatore romano Tiberio, dove potete visitare la famosa Grotta di Tiberio, Torre Truglia, per i più religiosi la chiesa di Santa Maria e per i naturalisti c’è il bellissimo parco regionale Riviera di Ulisse.  Potete anche spostarvi a Gaeta per fare una passeggiata e vedere il porto e tutto il lungomare, invece se volete vedere qualcosa di particolarmente bello, potete visitare la Grotta del Turco, “il Santuario della Montagna Spaccata”. Un altro posto da vedere tra un bagno e l’altro è ovviamente Terracina. Situata sul golfo di Gaeta. La città è tradizionalmente suddivisa in Terracina alta, l’antico centro cittadino con l’acropoli, sviluppatasi ulteriormente in epoca medioevale, e in Terracina bassa, risultato di una prima espansione in epoca romana, e di una seconda espansione nel XIX secolo. Qui potete vedere il famoso Tempio di Giove Anxur sulla cima del monte Sant’Angelo,  il Foro Emiliano, la cattedrale di San Cesareo, Foro Severiano e le Terme Nettunie.  Come aree naturalistiche invece, si può vedere il Lago di Fondi. Per quello che riguarda la vita notturna a Gaeta, Sperlonga e Terracina ci sono molti ristoranti, pub e locali sopratutto d’estate: Tiberio Club, il Fortino, Ville Corsari ed El Sombrero…Fateci un salto!
